English rockers Coldplay will begin a massive tour in late June, with plans to travel through November in support of their most recent release "Viva la Vida."
The band formed in 1997, and has made quite an impact on the alt-rock industry in just over ten years. They released four albums in their illustrious career, which has brought them to the top of the global rock game.
Coldplay formed at University College London in September of 1996 when frontman Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland met at orientation. Guy Berryman also joined the group over time, as did Will Champion. They were playing local gigs and signed to Parlophone in 1999, after completing their final exams.
Their first major album, "Parachutes," was released in 1999. The band found instant success with the singles "Shiver," "Yellow" and "Trouble." After exceeding sales expectations in England, the band moved in on North America and took home a 2002 Grammy Award for "Best Alternative Music Album." The group was known for Martins calm, mellow vocals combined with a vibrant rock sound.
In 2002, the band released "A Rush of Blood to the Head," which included the massive hits "In My Place," "Clocks" and "The Scientist." The traveled the globe on a massive tour, and recorded a live DVD and CD. In December of 2003 they were named the best artist and best band of the year. At the Grammy Awards, "Rush" took home the Best Alternative Music Album in 2003 and the Record of the Year for "Clocks" in 2004.
The band took some time to regroup, and in 2005 released "X&Y." The album cemented the Coldplays position as a force to be reckoned with in the rock industry, finding success with singes "Speed of Sound," "Fix You" and "Talk." The group spent most of the year on their Twisted Logic Tour, which included a number of summer festivals.
Coldplay took another break from the spotlight for about a year, and in 2007 began touring to pump up support for their newest album, "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends." The band debuted their first single at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards in May.
