New York Giants Season Preview
The New York Giants stunned the football world in 2007 by winning three straight postseason road games, including two against the top two teams in the NFC, and then beating the undefeated New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl. Even more impressive was the fact the Giants were able to win the Super Bowl without the services of tight end Jeremy Shockey, who broke his leg near the end of the regular season. The Super Bowl, and the playoffs for that matter, was a coming of age for quarterback Eli Manning, who proved he was plenty talented enough and had the composure to win big games. Manning had often been criticized in the past for his dumb mistakes and many felt he was a bust, but the quarterback outplayed a couple of future Hall-of-Famers to bring home the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Now the big question is, can Manning follow it up with a better statistical season in 2008? He will have all his weapons back from last season, so long as the team doesn't decide to trade the disgruntled Shockey. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress had a strong 2007 season despite playing injured the entire year. Now that he is healthy, expect a big year from him. Shockey could also have a strong season, especially now that wide receiver Steve Smith has given the team another target to take some pressure off of their two best offensive players. The running game should be strong as well, as Brandon Jacobs displayed an impressive blend of power and speed after recovering from an injury at the start of 2007. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw is a solid running back who provides a slight change in pace and compliments Jacobs very well. The Giants figure to be strong once again on defense, but they will be missing a couple key players for two completely different reasons. The biggest loss is defensive end Michael Strahan, who ended months of speculation and rumors by announcing his retirement in the spring. His veteran presence will certainly be missed, but the Giants are still expected to be one of the top pass-rushing teams in the NFL. The team also lost safety Gabril Wilson, who signed a big contract with the Oakland Raiders. Despite his departure, the Giants will still own one of the top secondaries in the NFC. The Giants should be able to push the Cowboys for the NFC East title, and a playoff berth seems like a strong possibility. Missing out on the postseason and failing to get the chance to defend their Super Bowl title would be a major disappointment. Information about GreatSeats.com
