Aces History

The Las Vegas Aces have a history that dates back to 1997 when they were founded as the Utah Starzz, one of the league’s original eight teams. The franchise underwent multiple relocations before finding its home in Las Vegas.

The team was initially based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and played under the Starzz name for six seasons. Despite having talented players like Natalie Williams and Margo Dydek, they struggled to establish themselves as a top contender. In 2003, the franchise moved to San Antonio, Texas, and rebranded as the San Antonio Silver Stars, later shortened to the Stars in 2014. This period saw a mix of highs and lows, with Becky Hammon, Sophia Young, and Danielle Robinson leading the team to multiple playoff appearances. Their best season came in 2008 when they reached the WNBA Finals but lost to the Detroit Shock.

In 2018, the franchise relocated again, this time to Las Vegas, under the ownership of MGM Resorts International. The team was renamed the Las Vegas Aces and quickly became one of the league’s premier franchises. The addition of A’ja Wilson, the first overall pick in the 2018 draft, marked the beginning of a new era. By 2020, the Aces reached the WNBA Finals but fell to the Seattle Storm. They continued to build their roster, adding key players like Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young under the leadership of head coach Becky Hammon.

In 2022, the Aces won their first-ever WNBA championship, defeating the Connecticut Sun in the Finals. A’ja Wilson earned MVP honors, and the team solidified itself as a powerhouse. They repeated their championship run in 2023, defeating the New York Liberty to become the first back-to-back WNBA champions in over 20 years.

Aces Players To Know

A'ja Wilson: A 6-foot-4 center who has been with the Aces since being drafted first overall in 2018. Wilson has consistently been a dominant force in the WNBA, earning multiple All-Star selections and leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Wilson's accolades include being named the WNBA MVP and leading the Aces to their first championship in 2022. Her leadership and on-court performance have solidified her status as a cornerstone of the franchise.

Jewell Loyd: A 5-foot-11 guard, joined the Aces in a high-profile trade during the 2025 offseason. Prior to joining Las Vegas, Loyd spent ten seasons with the Seattle Storm, where she earned six All-Star selections and won two WNBA championships. Known for her scoring ability and clutch performances, Loyd brings veteran experience and a championship pedigree to the Aces.

Chelsea Gray: A veteran point guard for the Las Vegas Aces, Gray is renowned for her exceptional playmaking, scoring ability, and leadership on the court. In 2021, she signed with the Las Vegas Aces, contributing to their back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023. Gray's accolades include being named the WNBA Finals MVP in 2022 and earning multiple All-WNBA team selections.

Las Vegas Aces Championships

In 2022, the Aces achieved a historic milestone by winning their first WNBA Championship. The victory was a testament to the team's hard work, resilience, and the strategic brilliance of head coach Becky Hammon, a former WNBA player and a pioneering figure in women's basketball coaching. The championship run featured memorable performances, including A’ja Wilson's MVP-worthy efforts and Chelsea Gray's clutch plays, solidifying their legacy in the league.

Aces 2025 Season

As of June 19, 2025, the Las Vegas Aces are 5–6 and sitting in the middle of the Western Conference standings, trailing teams like the Minnesota Lynx, Phoenix Mercury, and Seattle Storm. The season began with promise as they picked up a few solid wins in May, including dominant performances against the Connecticut Sun and Los Angeles Sparks, but June has brought a four-game losing streak that has exposed depth issues and inconsistency across the roster.

A’ja Wilson remains the team’s anchor and has been playing at an MVP-caliber level. She earned Player of the Week honors earlier this month after a dominant stretch that included a career-high 35-point performance. Her season averages of roughly 21 points and 10 rebounds continue to highlight her two-way dominance, but the load she carries has only increased with the team’s recent struggles. Jackie Young has had standout scoring nights, including a 34-point game against the Sparks and a 28-point showing against Dallas, but her performances have been inconsistent. Jewell Loyd, acquired in a major offseason move, has not yet found her rhythm with the Aces and is producing below expectations. Chelsea Gray has been steady but hasn’t provided the game-changing spark the team needs. The absence of Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, who is out due to pregnancy, and an early-season injury to Megan Gustafson have also limited the team’s options off the bench.

Commissioner’s Cup games have further highlighted their flaws. Blowout losses to the Golden State Valkyries and Minnesota Lynx revealed just how dependent the team is on Wilson. Coach Becky Hammon has openly addressed concerns about the team’s energy and lack of cohesion, as well as the organizational distractions that have emerged off the court, including front office turnover and questions about internal direction. Rookie Aaliyah Nye, their first-round draft pick, has seen limited minutes and hasn’t made a major impact yet.

Looking ahead, the Aces face a critical stretch of games, including more Commissioner’s Cup matchups that could make or break their playoff positioning. If Wilson continues to play at an elite level and the supporting cast can find some consistency, they could still rally into postseason form. But if the current trajectory holds, the Aces may be heading toward their most disappointing season in years, with questions mounting about whether their championship window is beginning to close.
