The Tampa Bay Lightning is a professional ice hockey team based in Tampa, Florida, that competes in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. The team plays their home games at Amalie Arena in Downtown Tampa. The Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004, 2020, and 2021. The team entered the league alongside the Ottawa Senators in 1992 and initially struggled, finishing with a losing record in each of the franchise’s first three seasons. However, they posted their first winning season in 1995-96 and earned a playoff berth as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning have been consistently successful in recent years, with a core group of players built through the draft. Despite their regular-season success, the team has been compared to the San Jose Sharks and the pre-Stanley Cup Washington Capitals for not being able to win in the postseason.
