Utah Hockey Club Introduction

The Utah Hockey Club is the latest addition to the NHL based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Established in April 2024, the franchise was granted to Ryan Smith, owner of the NBA's Utah Jazz, by the NHL Board of Governors. The team inherited the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes including players, coaching staff, and draft picks, while the Coyotes suspended their operations.

For its inaugural 2024–25 season, the team is temporarily named the "Utah Hockey Club" as it develops a permanent identity. The team's colors—Rock Black, Salt White, and Mountain Blue—reflect Utah's natural beauty. The home uniforms feature a black base with a diagonal "UTAH" wordmark across the front, while the road uniforms have a white base with black and blue striping.

The team is currently engaging fans in the selection of a permanent name with options including Blizzard, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom, Yeti, and retaining Utah Hockey Club. The final name is expected to be announced prior to the 2025–26 season.

Utah’s New NHL Stars

The Utah Hockey Club has built a strong roster to compete in the NHL including standout players who are ready to make their mark in the league. Here are a few to watch this season:

Clayton Keller: A dynamic forward and the captain of the Utah Hockey Club. Known for his elite playmaking ability and scoring touch, Keller was originally drafted 7th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2016 NHL Draft. A former NHL All-Star, he has consistently been a top performer, leading Utah in points during their inaugural season. His combination of speed, vision, and hockey IQ makes him one of the most exciting players on the team.

Mikhail Sergachev: A premier defenseman known for his physical presence and offensive contributions from the blue line. A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Sergachev brings valuable playoff experience and leadership to Utah. He excels at both ends of the ice, capable of shutting down top opponents while also quarterbacking the power play. His addition has solidified Utah's defensive core.

Dylan Guenther: A talented young winger with a lethal shot and strong offensive instincts. Selected 9th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft by Arizona, he was a key part of Utah's transition into the league. He made headlines with a multi-year contract extension proving his value as a cornerstone of the franchise's future. Despite battling injuries in 2025, Guenther remains a top goal-scoring threat and a crucial piece of Utah’s offensive attack.

Utah Hockey Club 2024-2025 Season

The Utah Hockey Club holds a record of 23 wins, 23 losses, and 9 overtime losses, totaling 55 points. This positions them fifth in the NHL's Central Division. The team has scored 153 goals while allowing 164, resulting in a goal differential of -11. Their special teams performance includes a power play success rate of 21.9% and a penalty kill efficiency of 82.1%.

In their inaugural season, the Utah Hockey Club has experienced a mix of highs and lows. They began the season with a strong start winning their first three games, which tied an NHL record for expansion teams. However, maintaining consistent performance has been a challenge. Notably, the team achieved a seven-game road winning streak, surpassing the previous record held by the 1967 Minnesota North Stars for an expansion franchise in its first season.

Offensively, forward Clayton Keller has been a standout, leading the team with 59 points, comprising 20 goals and 39 assists over 54 games. His contributions have been pivotal in several close contests.

Defensively, the team has faced challenges, as evidenced by their negative goal differential. Goaltenders Karel Vejmelka and Connor Ingram have shared duties between the pipes, each delivering notable performances, though the team has struggled to maintain consistency in preventing goals.

In recent games, the team has had mixed results. They secured a 3-2 overtime victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 6 but suffered a 7-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on February 8. These outcomes highlight the team's ongoing battle with consistency as they navigate their inaugural season.

As the season progresses, the Utah Hockey Club aims to find greater stability and improve their standing within the division. The development of team chemistry and the performance of key players like Keller will be crucial factors in their pursuit of a playoff spot in this debut season.
